Shopping for pre-used items and adopting sustainable laundry habits go perfectly hand in hand! These two practices are key pillars of a more circular lifestyle and are crucial steps in the journey to reducing textile waste. That’s why we’ve continued our collaboration with Sellpy. This time, we focused on educating the Sellpy community through their social media channels. Using playful polls, competitions, and quizzes, we shared reminders to wash clothes at lower temperatures.

Remember, your clothes last longer if you wash them gently. 30 degrees is enough!

Washing temperature on national Swedish TV

Washing temperature on national Swedish TV

We are so inspired to see washing temperature advice on national Swedish TV. In this episode of Modeinferno Modeinferno – Episode 7: Is 30 Degrees Enough? (SVT Play) the host fashion and sustainability expert Emily Dahl explores how we care for our clothes, and if 30°C is enough and sufficient to get them clean. The answer? Yes, for both your clothes and the planet. The episode also features an interview with Kevin Florström, a devoted advocate for sustainable fashion and home care routines who we have also had the great pleasure of collaborating with. It is amazing to see awareness growing around washing temperature. The episode also features an inspiring interview with the extra-ordinary designer Zamina Scillasdotter, known among other things for her work with Beyoncé. A must-see!

Changing washing habits with Elgiganten

Elgiganten is the largest consumer electronics retailer in the Nordic region and a company committed to sustainability. We joined forces to help educate people about more sustainable washing habits by training staff and rewarding consumers who choose laundry machines with a 30 degree default setting. Changing laundry habits across society requires collaboration and education. We are grateful to all the dedicated Elgiganten staff who brought a lot of good questions to our dialogue and for helping us to spread knowledge about smarter washing!

Habit Impact Day

Habit Impact Day

Habit Impact Day is Sweden’s key industry event focused on sustainability, innovation, circular transformation and future-ready strategies in fashion and retail. It is an inspiring and dynamic day with presentations, panels, networking and exclusive sessions designed to inspire eco-led transformation across the value chain. We were super-excited to join some of the brightest minds in the fashion and retail industry to talk about “30 is enough” and how changing our laundry habits make our clothes, and our planet, last longer. By rethinking how we care for our clothes we can significantly reduce textile waste and better honor the craft, materials and effort that go into every garment.

Did you know that a t-shirt can last up to twice as long if you wash it at a lower temperature? It’s really time we start talking about garment care as a natural part of sustainable fashion and we’re both happy and honored to actively drive this conversation in context like this, along with other impressive brands, organisations and stakeholders.

Pop-up at Haglöfs

We love to join forces with like-minded brands! So when our friends, the outdoor gurus at Haglöfs, reached out and offered us a place in their flagship store to talk about how the right care prolongs the life of outdoor garments we were of course very excited. We created an Electrolux care station and shared advice on how to wash, dry, clean and store everything from down to shell to keep those technical garments ready for adventure for many years to come! We also offer Haglöfs customers an ongoing service of having any purchased Haglöfs down or shell garment washed and dried for free right in the store throughout the year.

We have launched 30° is enough!

Published on

We have launched 30° is enough!

During an early January morning, 30° is enough!, an initiative created by Electrolux and implemented in collaboration with various partners, was finally launched. The launch event took place at the prestigious KA Almgren Sidenväveri in Stockholm and was moderated by fashion expert Emilia de Poret. Guests also got to listen to Electrolux VP of Sustainability Sarah Schaeffer, psychologist Björn Hedensjö and climate psychologist Kata Nylén.

30˚ is enough! is a long-term communication project and initiative created by us at Electrolux. The project is based on the extensive mapping we have done of the impact of our washing habits on the lifespan of garments and, in the next step, the climate impact of washing.

We are getting better and better in Sweden at making conscious choices when it comes to consumption and sustainability. But in one area we still have a lot to learn – how we wash our clothes. We wash our clothes and textiles using too high temperatures. This means that we consume an unnecessary amount of energy and that we shorten the lifespan of our garments.

When we look at the reasons why we wash at such high temperatures in Sweden, our research shows that it is a combination of different factors. Inherited habits are one (often from a time when both detergents and washing machines worked differently than today’s advanced alternatives), misconceptions about what is required to wash clothes clean are another. Many people look at the care label on the garment. It is also very common to simply choose the standard setting on the washing machine.

The fact is that in most cases, 30 degrees is enough for our regular everyday laundry to get clean, and if we go from 40 degrees or 60 degrees for the regular wash, our garments can live significantly longer and we consume less energy. But more about this in upcoming blog posts where we will share both interesting figures and smart tips and advice!

The Care Index – better care makes your clothes last longer

The Care Index – better care makes your clothes last longer

At Electrolux, we have developed a new metric called the Care Index that allows us to evaluate how clothing care is related to wear and tear. This method provides clear, evidence-based insights into how different washing programs affect the lifespan of different clothing items. This is important for us both for our own sustainability goals, and to address many consumers’ concerns about sustainability aspects linked to clothing.

Our study compared the effect of two washing cycles on several fabric types, reflecting two of the most popular owned items in the world – a cotton t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Our study showed that by using gentler washing programs, the lifespan of these garments can be extended by over 50%. Based on this, we have developed the Electrolux Care LCA model to quantify the environmental impact of different washing treatments on a garment’s overall footprint.

We need to keep our clothes and textiles in use for longer. The two easiest ways are to wear clothes more often between washes and to wash them in a more gentle way. Namely lower temperatures and shorter cycles. We need to start seeing clothing care as part of our lifestyle for a more sustainable future.

Reducing washing time and temperature from 40°C to 30°C can reduce GWP by around 20-25%.

You can read more about how we measured the lifespan of clothes in relation to clothing care and our goal to help clothes last twice as long with half the environmental impact in our Truth About Laundry Report.

About 30° is enough! in the media

Published on

About 30° is enough! in the media

The goal of 30° is enough! is to increase knowledge about how clothing care, and especially washing temperature, is important and to inspire as many people as possible to wash at a lower temperature more often. If 83% of Swedish households that wash hotter than 30 degrees lowered it to 30, we would save a whopping 261,167,751.20 kWh. That is enough to turn on 4,965,544 LED lamps for a year. In other words – one lamp turned on in all 4,931,974 households in Sweden for an entire year. (Calculation based on Statistics Sweden and the EU, Eurostat, Demography of Europe – 2024 edition)

We use different methods to spread knowledge and information to reach as many people as possible and we work with fashion experts, sustainability experts and psychologists to create as interesting information as possible. In connection with our press event when 30° is enough! was launched, Scandinavian Mind interviewed with Electrolux VP of Sustainability Sarah Schaefer. We highly recommend reading this interesting interview for more insight into the work with 30° is enough! from an Electrolux perspective.
